I noted some time ago that President Obama is seeking to delay the upcoming shutoff of analog over the air transition.

Apart from needlessly dragging out something that everyone should be prepared for, it turns out that the man who advised Obama on this issue (and contributed significantly to his campaign) stands to gain from the delay. Aside from the implications of quid pro quo, this doesn't bode well for the "most transparent administration ever" - the administration failed to disclose this connection.

It's about time.

This certainly isn't unique to Democrats or politicians, but why does it necessarily follow that ANY action is better than no action when confronted with bad news. Getting a burn on your hand is a problem. Doing nothing could result infection, or it could heal over an extended period of time with scarring - the final result might not be obvious and would depend on learning the extent of damage to your hand. Sticking your hand in boiling water is an action (after all heat kills germs), but is not better than doing nothing.

Why do we rarely (if ever) investigate what would happen if we did nothing?

College isn't for everyone

I've often thought this before - that pushing the notion that everyone needs a college education to make it - is bad for tons of people who either have little chance at success in college, or whose skills would be better enhanced via OTJ training or in a good trade school.

UMass-Amherst student Zac Bissonnette makes the case that it's more than just bad for the students. With almost 50% failing to receive a degree within six years, students, parents and taxpayers are throwing huge amounts of money down a rat hole.

Not to mention all those who do get a degree, but for whom it does nothing for their earnings potential.

While it makes sense that the visual footage of an Iraqi journalist throwing his shoe at President Bush would generate lots of discussion. However, is it all that odd that a country with a population of almost 30 million, there would be at least one person who dislikes our president?

Did anyone else notice that it was Iraqi's who escorted the man out? It's also worth noting that the reporter worked for Al-Baghdadia which broadcasts from Cairo. It would seem to follow that his beliefs might not exactly coincide with the majority of the Iraqi population.

Celebrating "Obscene" Profits

This isn't really a recent news item or anything, just an observation.

It's good that Congress was gracious enough to allow the oil companies to hang on to their "windfall profits". In light of the down economy - which includes plummeting oil prices - it is those exhorbidant profits that have kept Exxon, BP, Sunoco, etc from grovelling for bailout money along with the rest of Corporate America.

The phramcuedical industry is also excoriated for making money hand over fist (although Pfizer may have trouble ahead when it's patent on Liptor expires), but has been noticeably absent from the bailout trough.

On one hand, we lash out at companies that are profitable and on the other hand, we snub our noses at them when we prevent them from being profitable...

Funny how that works out.
